The Best Post-Swim Skincare Routine for Chlorine-Exposed Skin
Share
When you train you have a dedicated routine - Warm up, Main Focus, Cool Down.
So why is your skincare strategy usually: "Whatever soap is in the aquatic-centre shower"? For regular swimmers, a post-swim skincare routine should be as automatic as rinsing your goggles. The good news? You don't need ten products. You need the right steps in the right order.
STEP 1: RINSE
When your swim is finished, start with fresh water.
Don't sit around in wet swimwear for an hour if you can avoid it. Get changed and rinse the pool from your skin. This sounds incredibly basic, but basic habits done consistently make a better routine than an elaborate skincare ritual you only follow once a fortnight.
STEP 2: CLEANSE
Next comes actual cleansing. Your skin may be carrying a combination of pool residue, sweat, sunscreen, sebum and environmental impurities. For the face, use a cleanser that fits the frequency of your swimming.
Clean Swim's Probiotic Gel Face Cleanser was developed specifically for swimmers and active individuals and combines cleansing ingredients with ferments, oat and fruit extracts. Wet the face, massage in a small amount, allow it to form a light lather, rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
STEP 3: DON'T OVERDO IT
This deserves its own step. More isn't always more. Extremely hot water, aggressive scrubbing and repeated harsh cleansing can be counterproductive when you're already dealing with dry-feeling post-swim skin.
The aim is: effective cleansing + skin comfort.
STEP 4: REPLENISH
Once you've cleansed, think about what the pool routine may have taken from your skin.
This is where moisturising becomes important.
And for frequent swimmers, we'd prioritise ingredients designed around hydration and barrier support.
Ceramides are particularly relevant because they're naturally important components of the skin's outer barrier. Evidence from clinical research supports ceramide-containing formulations for improving hydration and barrier function.
Clean Swim's Ceramide Lotion combines three listed ceramides — NP, AP and EOP — with cholesterol, phytosphingosine and moisturising oils and butters.
STEP 5: MOISTURISE FACE + BODY
Your face isn't the only part of your body that went swimming.
💧 Shoulders.
💧 Arms.
💧 Legs.
💧 Chest.
💧 Back.
They're all exposed.
Apply your moisturiser to the areas that need it rather than restricting post-swim skincare to your face. This is particularly important when you're training frequently and notice recurring dryness on the body.
STEP 6: MAKE IT A HABIT
This is arguably the most important step.
A fantastic moisturiser sitting at home doesn't do much for your skin while you're standing in an aquatic-centre change room.
Pack your routine.
Keep your cleanser and lotion with your swim gear.
The sequence becomes:
SWIM
↓
RINSE
↓
CLEANSE
↓
REPLENISH
↓
REPEAT
That's it.
Morning squad swimmers
If you're training before sunrise, speed matters. You have school, university, work or kids to organise afterwards. Keep the routine streamlined.
✅ Cleanse.
✅ Moisturise.
✅ Go.
Swim-school parents
Kids' swimming lessons can turn into controlled chaos. Towels everywhere. Goggles missing. Someone is hungry. Someone else's underwear has mysteriously disappeared.
A complicated post-swim routine is not happening.
The lesson here is the same:
make post-pool care convenient.
Swim teachers
Swimming instructors are a completely different category. A recreational swimmer may spend 45 minutes in the pool. An instructor may spend hours there. Repeated and prolonged exposure makes a consistent routine even more valuable. Cleanse after your pool shift and moisturise rather than waiting for dry-feeling skin to remind you.
Aqua aerobics and rehabilitation swimmers
You don't need to be racing a 100m freestyle to qualify as a swimmer. If you're in the pool regularly for exercise, mobility, aqua aerobics or rehabilitation, your skin is still spending time in pool water. Your post-swim routine matters too.
Competitive swimmers
When training volume increases, everything becomes repetitive.
✅ Pool.
✅ Shower.
✅ Pool.
✅ Shower.
That's precisely why your skincare needs to be sustainable. Choose products that fit into training rather than trying to maintain an elaborate beauty routine around training.
✅ Two products. One simple system ✅
For swimmers who want to make this incredibly easy, the Clean Swim After Swim Dry Skin Duo combines the Probiotic Gel Cleanser and Ceramide Lotion.
Cleanse first.
Moisturise second.
Done.
What should you look for in swimmer skincare?
Think beyond the front label.
Look for products that address the actual post-swim problem.
Ask:
🫧 Is it appropriate for frequent cleansing?
🫧 Does it address hydration?
🫧 Does it support the skin barrier?
🫧 Was it actually designed with swimmers in mind?
This is the difference between adapting ordinary skincare to swimming and starting with the swimmer.
Your new post-swim cool-down
Your muscles get a recovery routine. Your skin can have one too. It doesn't need to be complicated.
Rinse. Cleanse. Hydrate. Repeat. 💦💦
Make it automatic. Your next swim starts with how you recover from the last one.
