How to Prevent Chlorine Rash & Irritation in Australian Swimmers

Australia’s swimmers know the joy of a refreshing dip, but chlorinated pools can also trigger an itchy, uncomfortable rash, especially for those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Here’s how to prevent and soothe chlorine-induced irritation:

Why it Happens
Chlorine is an irritant that strips skin of its natural oils and raises skin’s pH away from its healthy acidic level (around 5), leaving it vulnerable to dryness and rash—often referred to as “chlorine rash” or irritant contact dermatitis.

Step 1: Pre-Swim Protection

  • Rinse with fresh water before entering the pool to reduce chlorine absorption

  • Apply a light barrier such as a pre-swim oil or lotion Clean Swim’s Ceramide Lotion or Hair & Body Spray can help form a protective layer, keeping chlorine from directly contacting skin.

Step 2: Quick Rinse & Neutralise

  • Immediately after swimming, rinse with cold or lukewarm, not hot, water to gently remove surface chlorine

  • Use Clean Swim’s Activated Charcoal Body Wash or Hair & Body Spray with Vitamin C to neutralise chlorine, restore pH balance, and calm irritation Clean Swim.

Step 3: Rehydrate & Repair

  • Moisturise while skin is still damp to lock in hydration. Choose formulas rich in ceramides, humectants, and botanicals—like Clean Swim’s Ceramide Lotion to rebuild the skin barrier.

Step 4: Soothe Persistent Rashes

  • For red or itchy flare-ups, apply a cool compress, then layer with the Clean Swim Gentle Oil. Avoid harsh ingredients like alcohol that can further aggravate the skin

Routine Recap:

  1. Pre-swim rinse + barrier lotion

  2. Post-swim cool rinse + chlorine-neutralising Clean Swim product

  3. Moisturise with ceramide lotion

  4. Soothe irritation with gentle, fragrance-free hydration

By following this simple yet powerful routine, Australian swimmers, from club athletes to swim school parents—can enjoy the water without the aftermath.
